Feeding program

Periods of low activity

  • 250 g VOM
  • 250 g dry food

This is of course dependent on the dogs energy use. One must judge in each case if more or less is appropriate. But no matter what, mix one part dry food to one part VOM.

Active periods

Based on an energy consumption of 500 kcal per hour – common for periods of physical conditioning or other activities – adjust the calorie intake by giving a piece of VOM (500kcal) for every hour of activity. This comes in addition to the usual diet.

Hunting

Let’s look at a typical 8 hour hunt. The dogs total energy need is (8 hours x 500 kcal) 4000 kcal. As you see, that’s about three times the calories of the normal diet. If you were to use just dry food, that would mean getting the dog to eat three times as much – and often, especially with tired dogs, this is unrealistic.

We know that tired dogs prefer sleep and rest over food. But the great flavour of VOM awakens a dog’s appetite no matter how tired he is.

The best alternative is therefore to utilize VOM in feeding. And this gives your dog more fluids as well.
